Breed-specific screening helps responsible breeders and owners make better-informed decisions, but no screening program can guarantee an individual dog will remain free of disease.
Recommended screening
The AKC’s Toy Group health-testing guidance lists three recommended evaluations for the Russian Toy from the national breed club:
- Patella evaluation
- Cardiac evaluation
- Ophthalmologist evaluation
Dental health
Dental disease is especially relevant to very small dogs because a small mouth can create crowded conditions for teeth. Routine home care and veterinary examination can help identify problems before they become advanced.
When choosing a breeder
Ask for the actual results of recommended health evaluations rather than relying only on phrases such as “vet checked.” A responsible breeder should also be willing to discuss temperament, longevity and health patterns in related dogs.
